Letter: Senate agenda 'immoral,' should be for improving student life

04/25/07 - Dear Cigar,

My name is Brian Kurt and I am a freshman pharmacy major here at URI. In regards to the recent controversy regarding the College Republicans and their potential derecognition by the Student Senate, I have acquired some interesting information on this front.

I spoke to freshman senate member Allen Petit and he told me that the College Republicans are being reprimanded for false advertisement of the White Heterosexual [American Male] Scholarship and that they did not intend to give out the money. He also stated though, that even if they had given out the money, the group would have been derecognized because of discrimination, so the Republicans were caught in a Catch-22 of sorts.

Petit also talked about discussions being held privately between senate members that the vote will likely side against the College Republicans now for the sole reason that President Robert L. Carothers is opposing the senate.

Petit said that now the senate wants to stand up to Carothers and prove that he has no control and that it is an independent body. From this student's opinion, that is incredibly immoral and a great disservice to the student body.

The senate should be for improving student life here at URI, not for pushing their own agenda against Carothers in a power play of sorts. When school politics in Kingston starts looking like Washington, D.C. politics, something needs to change.

Brian Kurt
