Letter: Actions taken against College Republicans 'disturbing'
Posted: 4/25/07
04/25/07 - To the Cigar,

I am writing to express my concern with the actions taken by the Student Senate of the University of Rhode Island in regards to the College Republicans. It is disturbing to me, and it seems many URI alumni, that such a satirical act to point out the rift that specific race- and gender-oriented scholarships create between students not just at URI, but at universities everywhere.

The actions taken by the senate against the College Republicans are disturbing, but even more disturbing to myself, and I'm sure to the students and faculty of URI, is the complete disregard to both the university president's demand that the requirement for an apology be rescinded, as well as for university and the national Constitution.

As was shown by the senate's condemnation of the war in Iraq, a cause that I, as a soldier, proudly serve my country for, one would think that the First Amendment and freedom of speech is still alive and well at URI.

It might do well for the senate to prove that it is, as opposed to showing everyone following the story of this controversial decision that the senate's regime of dictatorial power extends rights only to those that they see fit.

Perhaps, as a microcosm of the United States government, the URI Student Senate should begin to act accordingly, instead of using tyrannical Nazi-like political methods.
